SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on Monday that there are nearly 100 Starlink internet terminals currently active in Iran. In September, Musk promised to bring the satellite internet network to the country as Iranian authorities implemented increasingly strict access restrictions. These restrictions were seen by activists as a way to limit information about protests that were occurring nationwide. Starlink’s network consists of over 2,000 small satellites orbiting Earth at a distance of a few hundred kilometers, providing internet access to users on the ground. The terminals on the ground are connected to basic routers that create small Wi-Fi spots. Earlier this year, Musk gained popularity in Ukraine after sending thousands of Starlink terminals to the country following Russia’s invasion. Ukraine now has 20,000 of these receivers. The announcement by Musk on Monday came in response to a user who recorded a video in the streets of Iran claiming that there was now more freedom for women to choose whether to cover their hair or not.
