On November 9 private madarsas in Assam have been asked to provide all information about their institutes, including their location and profile of teachers employed, to the state government by December 1. The December 1 deadline was set in a meeting of Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, Director of secondary education Mamata Hojai, other government officials, and representatives of madarsas. “The madarsas (private) will have to furnish the details to the directorate for secondary education via organisations under which they operate,” a government official said. The madarsas should be at least three kilometers apart and should preferably have 100 students. Madrasas that are situated within a three km radius should be amalgamated, DGP Mahanta said. The meeting also discussed the formulation of an administrative policy for the private madarsas and mentoring of the students who pass out from these institutions. Additionally, DGP told the madarsa bodies’ representatives that police verification is mandatory for any teacher hailing from outside the state in these institutions. Several madarsas in the state came under scanner after teachers employed in those institutions were arrested in the state earlier this year for their links with Islamic terror organisations Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). Altogether 47 Muslims, including the madarsa teachers, have been arrested in the state this year for their links with Islamic terror organisations.
