Assam government has demolished a Madrasa in Bongaigaon after finding links with Islamic terrorist organizations Al-Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). Markazul Ma-Arif Quariayana Madrasa, located at Kabaitary Part-IV village was demolished on August 31, 2022. This is the third Madrasa demolished by the Assam government in August 2022 for links with the Islamic terror outfits.
Goalpara district police earlier in a search operation on August 30 had seized documents of AQIS in Bangla language. As informed by the Bongaigaon district Superintendent of Police, Swapnaneel Deka:
Yesterday, the Goalpara district police also conducted a search operation along with an arrested person linked with AQIS/ABT in the madrasa. As per the direction of the district administration, we have started the process to demolish the Madrasa.
Earlier on August 30, another madrasa was demolished in the Dhakalipara area of Barpeta district named Shaikhul Hind Mahmudul Hasan Jamiul Huda Islamic Academy. As per the administration, the madrasa with links with AQIS/ABT was found to be on government land. As stated by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Lachit Kumar Das:
This institution is involved in anti-national activities and Jihadi outfits. We immediately came to the spot, verified the property, and found it to be on government land and did not find the owner. So we decided to demolish it immediately.
Earlier in August 2022, the Jamiul Huda Madrasa in the Moirabari area of Morigaon district was similarly demolished.
Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the madrasa management was not running the institution but an Islamic terrorist hub. He said:
This is the second madrasa we evicted as they were not running as an institution but were running as a terrorist hub. I don’t want to generalize, but we investigate and take appropriate action when a complaint of fundamentalism comes.
Assam CM added that Assamese Muslims have been cooperating with the state government in identifying Islamic terror activities in the state.
Assam Police arrested 37 Muslims in August, including Imam and Madrasa teachers linked with AQIS/ABT. As per Assam police, six Islamic terrorists from Bangladesh associated with the AQIS came to Assam a few years back as Imams. A large number of Muslims in Assam were recruited by them in the Islamic terror outfit. The Islamic terrorists have targeted the small sandy islands known as Char in Assam, as a large number of them are dominated by the Muslim community. Two of the Islamic terrorists have stayed in the Char regions of Goalpara district for the last 2-3 years and indoctrinated a significant population of the region.
Earlier on August 17, West Bengal police arrested two Islamists in North 24 Parganas district for having links with the AQIS.
