October 14, 2022

Assam Police have unearthed a big voter ID racket in the Barpeta district of the state, in which face voter identity cards were provided to Doubtful Voters (D voters) and illegal intruders. The racket is active mainly in the Muslim-majority areas of Lower Assam bordering Bangladesh. The mastermind of the racket has been identified as Farukh Khan, who has been arrested along with his two aides Abdul Ali and Sahidul Islam. A total of 262 fake voter IDs were reportedly recovered from the possession of Khan.

The police have reportedly seized electronic equipment including a desktop, a laptop, and a printer used in printing the fake voter IDs. The operation of busting the racket was conducted on the complaint lodged by District Election Officer Mayurakshi Dutta. Raids were conducted at three separate locations across Barpeta under the leadership of the Barpeta Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge.

As per reports published in the local media, the police have arrested the three for making fake voter identity cards for people of doubtful antecedents. The arrested people were running an organization named D Voters Nagarik Mancha. D Voter are those people who have cases against them pending with the Foreigners Tribunals or as declared as foreigners by the Tribunal in Assam.

In August 2022 Assam police informed that six terrorists from Bangladesh associated with the Islamic terrorist outfit Al-Qaeda came to Assam a few years back as Imams. A large number of Muslims in Assam were recruited by them in the Islamic terrorist organization. The Islamist terrorists have targeted the small sandy islands known as Char in Assam, as a large number of them are dominated by the Muslim community. Assam Police have arrested more than 30 Muslims, including Imam and Madrasa teachers linked with Al-Qaeda.
