BJP MP Sushil Modi objects to legalising ‘same-sex marriages’; says it will cause havoc in the social fibre of the nation

“Two judges can't decide on such an important social issue, which warrants a debate in Parliament and in society at large. Some left-liberals and activists are making efforts to change the ethos of the country. I urge the government to strongly argue against ‘same-sex marriage’ in court," Sushil Modi said.

On Monday, BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi objected to legalising ‘same-sex marriages’ in the Rajya Sabha and urged the government to strongly oppose any such move as it will create havoc in the social fibre of the nation where marriage is still a sacred institution.

“In India, ‘same-sex marriage’ is neither recognised nor accepted in any personal law like Muslim Personal Law or codified statutory laws. ‘same-sex marriage’ would cause havoc with the delicate balance of personal laws in the country,” Sushil Modi said.

Sushil Modi objected to the legalization of ‘same-sex marriage’ on both social and cultural grounds, saying that even though such relationships are decriminalized in the country, marriage is a sacred institution, so it is one thing for same-sex couples to live together, but giving them legal status is not recommended.

Arguing that a few judges cannot sit and decide on such a significant subject that can altar society at several levels, Modi said, “Two judges can’t decide on such an important social issue, which warrants a debate in Parliament and in society at large. Some left-liberals and activists are making efforts to change the ethos of the country. I urge the government to strongly argue against ‘same-sex marriage’ in court”.

Later, Sushil Modi told the media that the government opposed the legalisation of ‘same-sex marriage’ in the Supreme Court in an affidavit.

The matter came up after four gay couples moved the Supreme Court urging for recognition of ‘same-sex marriages’.
