The rules for implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) are likely to be notified within the next fortnight or so, The Indian Express has reported citing its sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“I cannot tell you the date, but they will be notified before the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into force,” the report quoted a MHA official as saying.
The MCC comes into force when the Election Commission announces polls.
The CAA was enacted by Parliament in December 2019, however it could not be implemented as the rules were not notified.
Sources told The Indian Express that the rules will deal with the issue of documents needed to prove that the applicant came from Pakistan or Afghanistan or Bangladesh before December 31, 2014 and belongs to one of the religions mentioned in the Act.
The CAA amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 to provide a path to Indian citizenship for Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, and Parsi refugees from neighbouring Islamic countries Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan before December 31, 2014.
