The Centre has sought yet another extension to frame the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA), without which it cannot be implemented.
This is the eighth extension sought by the Modi government. The last such request was made by the MHA in January to extend the deadline until June 30.
The Union Home Ministry has written to the Parliament Committee on Subordinate Legislation in the Lok Sabha, seeking time until the end of September to frame CAA rules, The Hindu has quoted a government official as saying. The committee had granted the extension, the official added.
The CAA was passed by the Parliament on December 11, 2019, and the Presidential nod was received the next day. Subsequently, it was notified by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the Centre is yet to frame rules for it.
Earlier, in May 2022, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the CAA would be implemented once the Covid pandemic was over.
