In a rare tragic incident, a Class 9 student of a Lucknow school collapsed due to a heart attack in the classroom and was declared dead on arrival in the hospital.
The student identified as Atif Siddiqui was first taken to a nearby medical facility from where he was referred to the KGMU’s cardiology department. KGMU doctors declared him brought dead.
The body was later sent for postmortem examination. Chemistry teacher Nadeem Khan was taking the class when the students raised an alarm after Atif fainted.
“Atif was doing self-study while I was solving problems of a student when suddenly students raised the alarm. I rushed to Atif’s seat and took him in my arms, pumped his heart and gave him mouth-to-mouth oxygen but he didn’t respond. We then called the school nurse and took him to a nearby private hospital from where he was referred to KGMU,” TOI has quoted Khan as saying.
“It is an extremely unfortunate and tragic incident that has pushed all of us in great grief and shock. Atif was rushed to a nearby medical facility by his teacher and the school nurse in a car. By then the child’s father had also been informed and he also reached the medical centre,” CMS spokesperson Rishi Khanna said.
Khanna said when the child did not regain consciousness despite being given CPR several times, doctors said he had probably suffered a heart attack and should be taken to KGMU. “He was then rushed to KGMU with an oxygen cylinder in the ambulance provided by the medical centre but the doctors there declared him brought dead,” he added.
