Hindus in Dumka are protesting against the appointment of the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Noor Mustafa Ansari as the Investigation Officer (IO) in the murder case of Ankita Kumari. Hindus have alleged Ansari of negligence in the investigation due to his religious bias. Local Hindus have said that the SDPO classified Ankita as an adult while reporting the case, even though she was a 17-years-old juvenile. Hindus have demanded the suspension of Ansari.

17 years old Hindu girl named Ankita Kumari was in critical condition after a Muslim neighbor named Shahrukh Hussain poured petrol on her and set her on fire on August 23, 2022. As per reports, Ankita breathed her last at 2:30 am on August 28, 2022, at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, where she was admitted for treatment. Earlier, Hussain who had been stalking Ankita for months had set the girl on fire when she was fast asleep at her home in Dumka district of Jharkhand. Hussain had poured petrol through the window. Hussain had approached Ankita for a relationship and asked her to convert to Islam and marry him, but the victim girl had refused.

As per the statement given to the police by Sanjay Singh, the father of the deceased girl Ankita Kumari:

The accused threw petrol on my daughter from outside the window before setting her on fire when she was asleep and escaped even before anyone of the family members could have understood anything.

Singh added that Hussain had also threatened her with dire consequences.
