India has told Canada that it must repatriate 41 diplomats by October 10, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

As per the report, India has told Canada that if any of these diplomats stay after October 10, their diplomatic immunity will be revoked.

Earlier, New Delhi had said it wanted parity in the number and grade of diplomats between India and Canada. Notably, Ottawa has many more diplomats in New Delhi than India has in Canada.

Sources told  the Financial Times that Canada had 62 diplomats in India and that New Delhi had told them to reduce that by 41 people.

Ties between India and Canada have become seriously strained over Canadian allegations that Indian government agents had a role in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.

India has dismissed the allegations as motivated and absurd.
