US President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington would not support a counterattack on Iran by Israel, a media report said.
Biden conveyed his message to Netanyahu during a call after the Islamic Republic of Iran launched a barrage of drones and missiles directly towards Israeli territory on Sunday.
The US President also told Netanyahu that the US “will not participate in any offensive operations against Iran and will not support such operations”, a White House official told American newsletter Axios.
As per the report, the White House official further said that Biden toldd Netanyahu that “joint defensive efforts” by the US, Israel and other nations in the region “led to the failure of the Iranian attack”. The US President then told the Israeli Prime Minister, “you got a win. Take the win.
“At my direction, to support the defence of Israel, the US military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defence destroyers to the region over the course of the past week… We helped Israel take down nearly all the incoming drones and missiles,” the US President was quoted as saying in the official statement issued by the White House.
Earlier, sirens blared across Israel on Saturday night as hundreds of drones and missiles launched from Iran reached Israel. Drones and missiles were also reportedly launched from Yemen and other countries around the region.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has said that the full Iranian attack consisted of over 300 threats, of which 100 were ballistic missiles launched from Iran and another 30 cruise missiles launched from Iran, as well as drones. There were also two rounds of rockets, around 40 total, fired on Israel from Lebanon, with Israel responding with counterattacks in close to real-time.
IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Daniel Hagari said that 99% of the aerial threats were shot down, which he said was a strategic achievement.
