Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been arrested by the police at his home in Lahore after he was found guilty in the Toshakhana corruption case. A Pakistani trial court sentenced him to three years in jail in the case in which he has been accused of profiting from selling expensive state gifts when he was in power.
The court also imposed a Rs 100,000 fine on Khan, adding that he would be kept in jail for another six months if failed to pay the fine. The Islamabad trial court also barred Imran Khan from participating in active politics for five years.
Khan has denied any wrongdoing and his legal team said they would be filing an immediate appeal.
In a pre-recorded statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, he told his supporters, “I have only one appeal, don’t sit at home silently”.
“I only have one request, one appeal for you. You must not sit quietly inside your homes. The struggle I am doing is not for my own self, it’s for my nation, for you. For the future of your children,” he said. “If you don’t stand up for your rights, you will live lives of slaves and slaves don’t have a life,” Khan added.
On Friday, Pakistan’s Supreme Court had dismissed Imran Khan’s plea against trial proceedings observing that the application seeking the transfer of the case to another court was underway in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
