Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that the country will be responsible for the “overall security” of the Gaza Strip for an “indefinite period” after the war against Hamas ends.
“I think Israel will, for an indefinite period, will have the overall security responsibility because we’ve seen what happens when we don’t have it,” the Prime Minister said while speaking to ABC News.
“When we don’t have that security responsibility, what we have is the eruption of Hamas terror on a scale that we couldn’t imagine,” he added.
The US has voiced its opposition to that scenario as well, while warning Jerusalem that it is more likely to find itself bogged down in Gaza if it doesn’t start drawing up a plan for who will govern the enclave if it succeeds in removing Hamas from power.
President Biden told CBS’s “60 Minutes” last month that Israel occupying Gaza would be a “big mistake,” arguing that “there needs to be a Palestinian authority” in charge that would lead to a “Palestinian state.”
