Narges Mohammadi, the jailed Iranian women’s rights advocate, has won the 2023 Nobel peace prize for fighting the oppression of women in the Islamic Republic.

“The Norwegian Nobel committee has decided to award the 2023 Nobel peace prize to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all,” the committee said in its citation.

“Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs. Altogether, the (Iranian) regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Ms Mohammadi is still in prison as I speak,” it added.

She is serving multiple sentences in Evin prison in Tehran. Charges against her include spreading ‘propaganda’ against the state.

She is the deputy head of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, a non-governmental organisation led by Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel peace prize laureate.
