On July 18, a Hindu student was beaten and humiliated at a school in Jharkhand’s Bokaro for wearing a sacred thread (Kalawa) on his wrist. The incident occurred at Carmel High School, situated in Bokaro Thermal.
As per a report by Dainik Jagran, the student named Karan Thakur reached the school wearing a Kalawa on his wrist. The monitor of his classroom complained about this to a teacher. The teacher, identified as Amit Lakda, told Karan that wearing Kalawa is forbidden in the school and asked him to remove it. Karan, however, refused to remove it, saying that it was a matter of his faith. After this, the teacher humiliated Karan and beat him up in front of the class. Then Karan reluctantly cut the Kalawa tied to his wrist with a blade. The teacher reprimanded the student and asked him to get his father to school the next day.
The student went back home and narrated the incident to his parents. After this, concerned Hindus, along with the parents, reached the school premises the next day and protested against the incident. They met with the school principal, Sister Joyce Kullu, and asked her to initiate an inquiry into the matter.
According to a report by ETV Bharat, the accused teacher has been suspended.
Earlier this month, a minor Hindu girl in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad committed suicide after being beaten up by her school teacher for wearing a bindi on her forehead. She took her own life after being humiliated and slapped by her female teacher during a prayer session at Dhanbad St. Xavier School, Tetulmari.
