Kerala and Tamil Nadu outlaw PFI after Centre imposes ban on the Islamist organization 

PFI has been banned for five years along with its other eight front organizations by the Centre under the UAPA.

After the union government banned the Islamist organization Popular Front of India (PFI) on September 28, the state governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have also issued notifications declaring PFI and its front organization as unlawful associations. The order passed by the Tamil Nadu government said: 

The Governor of Tamil Nadu hereby directs that all the powers which are exercisable by the Government of Tamil Nadu under sections 7 and 8 of the said Act in relation to the aforesaid unlawful association, namely “Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates or affiliates or fronts including Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CFI), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Rehab Foundation, Kerala” shall also be exercised by the Commissioners of Police in the Cities and by the District Collectors elsewhere.

PFI has been banned for five years along with its other eight front organizations, which include the Campus Front of India (CFI), Rehab India Foundation(RIF), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation, and Rehab Foundation, Kerala. The ban has been imposed under the unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967. The notification issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs banning PFI and its front organizations stated: 

There had been a number of instances of international linkages of PFI with Global Terrorist Groups and some activists of the PFI have joined Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and participated in terror activities in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Some of these PFI cadres linked to ISIS have been killed in these conflict theaters and some have been arrested by State Police and Central Agencies and also the PFI has linkages with Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), a proscribed terrorist organization.
