A police constable from Maharashtra’s Beed district, Lalit Kumar Salve, who underwent ‘sex reassignment’ surgery to become a ‘man’ and got married in 2020, has become a ‘father’.
Salve became a ‘father’ to a baby boy on January 15 when his wife Seema delivered a baby boy.
Originally named Lalita Salve at birth in June 1988, Salve reportedly observed bodily changes in 2013. Medical tests revealed the presence of a Y chromosome, typically associated with males, whereas females typically have two X chromosomes.
Diagnosed with gender dysphoria, doctors recommended sex reassignment surgery for Salve, as men typically possess both X and Y sex chromosomes.
“We will provide him with a gender-neutral environment at home so that he grows up to understand and articulate his own gender identity – we will support whatever call he takes,” Salve told Hindustan Times over the phone.
In November 2017, Salve had moved the Bombay High Court seeking a month’s leave to undergo ‘sex-reassignment’ surgery, which was granted. Salve underwent three surgeries in the state-run St George Hospital in Fort before marrying Seema on February 16, 2019.
