‘Ministry of Home Affairs agrees to withdraw 86 cases against farmers’: Union Agriculture Minister in Rajya Sabha

"As per the inputs received from the Ministry of Home Affairs, 86 no. of cases against farmers for withdrawal have been received and concurred with. Further, the Ministry of Railways has issued direction for the withdrawal of all cases registered by Railway Protection Force (RPF) during the farmers’ agitation," Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar stated in a written response to the Upper House.

The Union government on 16 December told the Rajya Sabha that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided to dismiss 86 cases against farmers who were part of the year-long agitation for repealing three farm laws.

“As per the inputs received from the Ministry of Home Affairs, 86 no. of cases against farmers for withdrawal have been received and concurred with. Further, the Ministry of Railways has issued direction for the withdrawal of all cases registered by Railway Protection Force (RPF) during the farmers’ agitation,” Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar stated in a written response to the Upper House.

The Minister responded to a question from Congress member Deepender Singh Hooda about whether the administration has, dropped the complaints against farmers filed during the protest in all states, as promised by the government.

Hooda also sought information on the compensation paid to the families of farmers who died during the protests.

“Such details are not maintained in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare,” the Agriculture Minister stated in response to the aforementioned query.

Earlier, on 19 November, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government has decided to repeal the three farm laws and appealed to the protesting farmers to return home.
