Muslim engineering student held for having contact with ISIS, planning terror attack

As per the police, the accused was communicating with the ISIS using social media platforms such as Telegram and Instagram.

A nationwide search was conducted by the intelligence agencies across 29 places before the arrest

The police have arrested a 22 years old Muslim student in Tamil Nadu for alleged links with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The accused named Meer Anaas Ali is a resident of Ambur. Ali is a third-year mechanical engineering student at a private college in Melvisharam, Ranipet. Ali was arrested by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) at 4 am on 30 July 2022 from his home.

Ali came on the radar of the IB after his online activities raised suspicion against him. The police discovered Ali communicating with the ISIS using social media platforms like Telegram and Instagram from his smartphone. The police found the accused conspiring with ISIS to carry out terrorist attacks; in order to instill fear among non-Muslims and to kill an important personality.

Ali was interrogated for several hours by the police. The police have registered FIR against Ali following the investigation. The accused has been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 121 (waging war against Govt of India), 122 (collecting arms), 125 (waging war against any Asiatic power), and relevant provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
