Hundreds of Muslims stormed the Swedish embassy in Iraq’s Baghdad on Thursday morning, scaling its walls and setting it on fire in protest against the burning of the Quran in Sweden.
Highlighting the need for Iraqi authorities to protect diplomatic missions, the Swedish foreign ministry press office condemned the attack and said All Baghdad embassy staff were safe.
As per reports, the demonstration was called by supporters of Shi’ite cleric Muqtada Sadr to protest the second planned Quran burning in Sweden in weeks.
Swedish police on Wednesday granted an application for a public meeting outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm on Thursday, the police permit showed. Police said in the permit that two people were expected to participate, Reuters has reported.
Swedish news agency TT reported that the two planned to burn the Quran and the Iraqi flag at the public meeting, which included a man who set the Quran on fire outside a Stockholm mosque in June.
In an act of protest, an Iraqi-born refugee tore pages of the Quran and burned them outside a mosque in Stockholm in June.
