The special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Ernakulam on September 14, 2022, convicted an Islamic terrorist named Shaibu Nihar, alias, Abu Mariyam in the ISIS Wandoor case of Kerala. The press release issued by the NIA informed that it was established after the investigation that Mariyam had raised funds to further the activities of the ISIS. Mariyam has been convicted under sections 120(B) and 125 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 38, 39, and 40 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Kerala Police had registered the case on November 6, 2017, in Malappuram district under sections 38 and 39 of the UAPA, against eight people for links with ISIS, including Mariyam. The case was re-registered by NIA on June 1, 2018, after the investigation revealed that Mariyam had raised funds to further the activities of ISIS and had also provided the same to the co-accused for their intended travel to Syria to join the Islamist terrorist outfit. Mariyam was arrested on April 9, 2019, at the Calicut International Airport in Kerala on his arrival from Qatar.
