Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and retired Supreme Court judge, Arun Kumar Mishra while addressing the 29th Foundation Day celebration of the NHRC on October 12, 2022, said that “though India has many socio-economic welfare schemes, reservation is still needed for upliftment”. The Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankar, was also present at the foundation day celebration of NHRC in Delhi.

Justice (retd) Mishra while supporting the reservations said:

Several measures have been taken for socio-economic and political upliftment of the marginalised sections of the society. More affirmative action is needed. The time has come to clarify that unrepresented classes in services are provided reservation within the reserved category itself to ensure overall development, because fruits of reservation have not percolated to the bottom.

Mishra also stressed on the urgent need for jail reforms.

Vice President in his address said:

India, as a nation, never believed in expansion; never done so.

“Any expansion, particularly of geographical boundaries, involves a violation of human rights to an extreme degree”, Vice President added.
