Senegal: man’s body exhumed and set on fire for being gay

A 31-year-old man’s body was dug up from his burial and publicly set ablaze in Senegal when it was discovered by the locals that he identified as gay.

The man identified as Cheikh Fall, had been buried in Léona Niassene cemetery in the central Senegalese town of Kaolack on Friday evening. Local media reported that the man’s family tried to arrange a burial in the nearby Touba, the holy city of the Islamic Mouride brotherhood but they were denied by the authorities because he was a gay. Later, the family decided to bury the man closer to their home and buried him in secret. However, 24 hours after his burial, locals found out about the incident and proceeded to exhume him and set him on fire.

More than 95% of the country follows Islam. Homosexuality is haram in Islam. In Senegal, homosexuality is punishable with prison time and even death sentences in extreme cases.

As of now, four people have been arrested in connection to this horrific act.
