A Mumbai Sessions court has observed that indulging in sex work itself is not an offence but prostitution in a public place can be an offence. The court said so while ordering the release of a 34-year-old female sex worker from a shelter home. The sex worker was detained after a raid at a Mulund brothel in February. She had approached the court after the magistrate’s court on March 15 this year directed her to be detained at the shelter home in Mumbai for one year for care, protection and shelter.
