Absconding Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh was arrested by West Bengal Police on Thursday.
Sheikh is the prime accused in the Sandeshkhali case where several women have accused local TMC leaders of land grabs and sexual assault.
This comes a day after the Calcutta High Court said that Sheikh can be arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or the West Bengal Police.
The arrest comes 55 days after a team of Enforcement Directorate officials were attacked during a raid at his residence on January 5 in the State’s Sandeshkhali area. “We have arrested Sheikh Shahjahan, one of the prime accused in the attack on ED officials during a raid on January 5, 2024, from Minakha area yesterday night. He will be produced before a court,” said Supratim Sarkar, Additional Directorate General (South Bengal) of West Bengal police.
Sheikh was on the run since January 5.
BJP was alleging that the TMC is saving Sheikh from arrest.
