UK Election 2024: Starmer’s Labour Party crosses majority mark to form govt; PM Rishi Sunak concedes defeat

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded the Conservative Party’s defeat in the 2024 general election on Friday and congratulated Labour Party Prime Minister candidate Keir Starmer following the election loss.

“The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” Sunak said after winning his parliamentary seat in northern England.

“Today, power will transition peacefully and orderly, with goodwill from all parties,” he further said.

“There is a lot to understand and contemplate, and I accept responsibility for the defeat of many dedicated Conservative candidates… I apologise,” Sunak added.

Labour Party is poised for a landslide victory in the parliamentary election held on Thursday. Starmer will be replacing Sunak as Prime Minister, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.

As per latest reports, Labour party has won  360 seats.

The survey for UK broadcasters suggested left Labour would win 410 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons, with the right-wing Tories managing only 131.
