A high school transgender runner was booed while being crowned as the Oregon Girls’ 6A 200-meter state champion.
Aayden Gallagher, of McDaniel High School, won the state title by two-tenths of a second. He was also booed while crossing the finish line of the race.
Gallagher stormed to victory in the 200-meter final on Saturday and he stood alongside six other girls as the result was announced.
The races took place in Eugene, Oregon in the same stadium where the US Championships and Olympic trials are held.
Gallagher caused outrage on social media on Wednesday after competing in several events at the Portland Interscholastic League Championship semifinals against girls.
Even prior to the win, his participation in the race has been criticized by Republican lawmakers, who called for a change to the regulations after Gallagher clinched a win during a previous 400m race.
“Aayden Gallagher (male) dominates his heat of the women’s 400m this morning at the Oregon Track & Field State Championships. He will run in the state championship final tomorrow. When will we see coaches and parents standing up to this mockery?” US swimmer Riley Gaines said in a post on X.
