A Jadavpur University student said that it is their right to smoke and drink inside the campus.

“It is important to observe that all the people who are talking big about why there are this many beer bottles ins the campus, all these people I am pretty sure are not people who have not touched alcohol in their entire life. They do it (drink alcohol) in their own homes, now the institution we treat like our second home, which is why we have complete right if we want to smoke and drink on the campus,” a girl student can be heard saying in a video which has gone viral on social media.

When asked who has given her these rights, she responded, “No one is supposed to give me my rights, I have those rights for myself”.

“I am not saying that everyone should sit and drink in the campus. I am saying that these rules that have been levied have absolutely no purpose. If somebody wants to drink inside the bathroom, they can very well go and do that but no CCTV will stop that,” she further said when asked, “Who is stopping you from drinking, why do you have to drink inside the campus.”.

Earlier, reports said that the University has banned alcohol inside the varsity premises and said no entry will be given to students without valid identity proof.

This came days after the death of a first-year undergraduate student on the college campus.
