West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has reached out to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for identifying an appropriate technology solution to curb the menace of ragging on college and university campuses.

“C V Ananda Bose, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal and Chancellor of the universities contacted the Chairman of ISRO for identifying appropriate technology to effectively contain and eliminate the menace of ragging in the university campuses,” the Raj Bhavan said in a statement on Thursday.

Bose has also held discussions with a Hyderabad-based firm over the issue. “They are trying to develop an appropriate technology solution using multiple sources such as video analytics, image matching automatic target recognition and remote sensing,” the statement said, as per PTI.

Buddhadeb Sau, interim vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University said that artificial intelligence (AI) may be used to tighten security at the campus. “Discussions were held (with the Governor) on Thursday on how artificial intelligence could be used to tighten security in the campus. Apart from installing CCTV cameras, there are multiple other technologies which may be used,” Sau said on Friday.

“We are exploring whether technology may be used to restrict the movement of outsiders in the university. ISRO officials said it is possible. I am not sure about the technology. I am not sure as to how remote sensing may be used to trace and detect a face or an image. We will try to gather details from ISRO,” Sau added.

This came days after the death of an undergraduate student at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University. A first-year undergraduate student died earlier this month after being ragged and sexually harassed in a hostel of the University.
