Only the second Hindu to play for the Pakistan cricket team, former cricketer Danish Kaneria, has said that he was a victim of relentless communal taunts and pressure to convert to Islam from fellow Pakistani Muslim players—on and off the field.

Kaneria posted a video on X on Sunday of a Pakistan-Sri Lanka match in 2014 where a Pakistani Muslim player could be seen telling Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan that he would go straight to heaven (jannat) if he converted to Islam.

Sharing the video, Kaneria wrote, “Be it dressing room, the playground or the dining table, this happened to me every day.”

“If you (are a) non-Muslim and you turn Muslim, no matter whatever you do in life… straight to heaven (Jannat),” the Muslim player is seen telling Dilshan after the match.

A smiling Dilshan says something, and is met with the response, “Then be ready for the fire (Jahannam).”

“Many people like you tried to change my religion, but did not succeed,” Kaneria had said earlier on another occasion in a response to a Muslim man asking him to convert to Islam.
