Islamic documents regarding waging Jihad were found by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the house of the deceased Jamesha Mubeen in the Coimbatore blast case. The investigation found hand-drawn flow charts which classified humans as Kafirs (a derogatory term for non-Muslims) and Muslims. One of the charts said that Jihad is the duty of young Muslims, not children or old people. Another chart described a Hadees related to the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

“We found the trimmer with which he shaved off his body hair before bathing and changing. He seems to have offered prayers and drawn the IS flag on a slate using chalk,” an official said. He further said, “Mubeen scribbled on the slate in Tamil that those who dare to touch the house of Allah will be uprooted”.

“We have material that shows he was influenced by videos of Sri Lankan Easter blasts mastermind Maulvi Zaharan Bin Hashim,” the official added.

“Mubeen also purportedly wrote on a piece of paper about the call of duty of jihad. He mentioned it was the duty of the youth-not children and elderly people-to wage a holy war. He listed humans under two categories in ascribbling-as Muslims and Kafirs. One of the scribblings reads vaal yenthul (wield the sword)”, the official further said.

On October 23, 2022, Jamesha Mubeen got killed when the car in which he was sitting exploded outside the Kottai Eshwaran Temple in Ukkadam of Coimbatore, a Muslim-majority area. Tamil Nadu police recovered chemicals like potassium nitrate, aluminum, and sulphur from Mubeen’s house which are used to make crude bombs. The police also recovered nails and ball bearing from the spot where the explosion happened.

The NIA overtook the investigation of the case on November 2.

Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident and booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Coimbatore Commissioner Balakrishnan said that a few of them had visited Kerala earlier. He added that the NIA also questioned the arrested people in 2019.
